Caralluma - To Reduce Food Cravings and Appetite

Caralluma fimbriata is a remarkable medicinal cactus native to India, long celebrated for its ability to suppress hunger and enhance endurance. Known as a “famine food,” it has been traditionally chewed by tribal hunters and laborers to reduce appetite and thirst during long journeys or periods of food scarcity. This practice reflects the ancient “law of signatures,” where the plant’s ability to thrive with minimal nourishment symbolically points to its power to curb human hunger. Today, Caralluma has gained international recognition as a natural aid for managing appetite and supporting weight control.

Scientifically, Caralluma fimbriata’s bioactive compounds—particularly pregnane glycosides—work by inhibiting key enzymes involved in fat synthesis, such as citrate lyase and malonyl coenzyme A. This not only reduces fat formation but also encourages the body to burn stored fat for energy. Clinical studies have shown that supplementation can reduce waist circumference, body weight, and fat composition, while maintaining energy and lean muscle mass. Its safety has been confirmed by its “Generally Recognized As Safe” (GRAS) status, making it a valuable nutraceutical in addressing obesity and metabolic syndrome.

In traditional medicine, Caralluma is consumed daily as a cooked vegetable, pickle, or raw plant, providing both nutrition and medicinal benefits. Its endurance-boosting, thirst-quenching, and appetite-suppressing properties have supported generations in India’s arid regions. Modern science now confirms what tribal wisdom long understood—that this humble cactus holds profound potential for balancing metabolism and aiding healthy weight management naturally.

Scientific Studies & Evidence

  • Traditional Use: Chewed by Indian tribal hunters and laborers to suppress appetite and thirst; considered a “famine food” and energy enhancer.
  • Active Compounds: Contains pregnane glycosides, caratubersides, boucerosides, sitosterol, luteolin, and kaempferol—all contributing to fat metabolism and appetite control.
  • Mechanism of Action: Blocks citrate lyase and malonyl CoA, reducing fat formation and promoting fat burning.
  • Clinical Trial (50 participants): Eight-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study showed significant reductions in body weight, BMI, body fat, and waist circumference with minimal side effects.
  • Metabolic Support: Shown to improve central obesity and metabolic profiles when combined with healthy diet and exercise.
  • Safety: Approved as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) for use as a nutraceutical.

Gymnema Leaves - Reduce Sugar Cravings

Gymnema sylvestre, often called “the sugar destroyer”, is one of nature’s most remarkable gifts for balancing blood sugar and reducing cravings. Native to tropical India, this climbing plant has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 6,000 years. Its Sanskrit name Madhunashini literally means “destroyer of sweetness,” reflecting both its ability to block the taste of sugar on the tongue and its profound effects on glucose metabolism. Tribal healers and Ayurvedic physicians have long relied on Gymnema to restore balance in those with diabetes, fatigue, or excessive appetite, and modern science now confirms these ancient insights with a growing body of clinical evidence.

The key to Gymnema’s power lies in its gymnemic acids—a group of bioactive triterpenoid saponins that influence multiple pathways in glucose metabolism. They help stimulate insulin secretion, increase cellular glucose uptake, and reduce liver glucose production. Additionally, these compounds temporarily block sugar receptors on the tongue and intestines, dulling the taste of sweetness and limiting sugar absorption. This combination of effects not only helps lower blood sugar and cholesterol but also reduces sugar cravings—making it a powerful tool for those seeking natural weight management and metabolic balance.

Beyond its blood sugar benefits, Gymnema supports pancreatic regeneration, helping to restore the beta cells responsible for insulin production. Research shows that regular supplementation can enhance the body’s natural insulin response, lower triglycerides, and reduce fatigue associated with glucose imbalances. Safe and well-tolerated even at high doses, Gymnema offers an exceptional example of how traditional herbal medicine and modern pharmacology converge to provide effective, natural solutions for chronic metabolic conditions.

Scientific Studies & Evidence

  • Traditional Use: Known in Ayurveda as Madhunashini (“destroyer of sweetness”); used for diabetes, cravings, and general metabolic balance for over 6,000 years.
  • Active Compounds: Contains oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins (gymnemic acids I–VII, gymnemosides A–F, gymnema-saponins).

Mechanisms of Action:

  • Stimulates insulin production from pancreatic beta cells.
  • Enhances glucose uptake in tissues and reduces liver glucose output.
  • Blocks sugar absorption in intestines and suppresses sweet taste receptors on the tongue.

Pancreatic Regeneration:

Animal studies show regeneration of pancreatic β-cells after Gymnema administration (1, 2, 3).

Clinical Findings:

  • Reduces blood glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides in type 2 diabetics.
  • Decreases sugar cravings by blocking sweet taste receptors. (4)
  • Safe for long-term use—no toxicity observed at doses >500 mg/kg for 52 weeks.

Ingredients in Detail

A brief summary of each ingredient is found below. For a more detailed insight into each ingredient including links to the research, click on the ingredient name.

Caralluma (Caralluma fimbriata)
Supplementation with Caralluma Fimbriata extract whilst controlling overall dietary intake and physical activity may potentially play a role in curbing central obesity, the key component of metabolic syndrome.

In Western India, Caralluma Fimbriata is well known as a famine food, appetite suppressant, and thirst quencher. The green follicles are eaten, boiled and salted. It also finds use today as an appetite suppressant and famine food during times of famine, in the semi-arid regions of India.

The tribal community treats Caralluma Fimbriata as a food item for daily consumption. They believe that Caralluma is a unique herb which cures common health problems as well as enjoying its fantastic ability to suppress appetite and thirst.

Gymnema (Gymnema sylvestre)
You simply can’t taste sugar after taking gymnema. That’s because the atomic arrangements of the gymnemic acids (found in gymnema) appear to the taste buds very similar to sugar molecules which fill the receptors in the taste buds preventing their activation by the sugar molecule in the food. Similarly, in the intestine it attaches to the receptor present in the external layer of the intestine, thereby preventing the absorption of sugar molecules by the intestine, leading to a reduction in blood sugar levels.

Many studies have been published on the effects of gymnema. They have shown the plant to reduce excessive appetite, fatigue, blood glucose concentration as well as showing a favorable blood fat lowering effect. One study showed that gymnema therapy appears to enhance endogenous insulin, possibly by regeneration/revitalization of the residual beta cells in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
Coleus forskohlii (Plectranthus barbatus)
Coleus is one of the commercially important herbal ingredients for weight loss dietary supplements in the global market. Its favorable effects on body fat management have been well established.

Limited human studies have indicated that supplementation with Coleus forskohlii extract elicits favorable changes to body composition. One study found a significant reduction of body fat percentage in overweight and obese men after 12 weeks of supplementation with Coleus forskohlii extract.

It may stimulate the release of fatty acids from adipose tissue, which results in increased thermogenesis, loss of body fat, and theoretically increased lean body mass.

Chromium polynicotinate

Chromium is necessary for the uptake of sugar into the body’s cells by insulin. If sugar is not taken into the cell to be used for energy then the body must take it away from the blood vessels to prevent harm.
On a molecular level chromium enhances the effect of insulin on insulin receptors, glucose transporters and glycogen synthase, the enzyme that converts glucose to glycogen.

If the body is supplied with chromium a healthy blood sugar balance is more easily maintained because the body is able to utilize more sugar for energy into the cells where it is needed.
