Chlorophyll In Detoxing & Other Health Benefits

Chlorophyll is the major complex green pigment in all leafy plants, algae, and certain bacteria, essential for photosynthesis as it converts light energy into chemical energy.

These bioactive molecules exhibit a wide range of beneficial effects, including antioxidant, antimutagenic, antigenotoxic, anti-cancer, and anti-obesogenic activities.

Let’s explore these briefly before embarking on a journey into the 7-Day Green Power Detox Program.

Chlorophyll Binds Carcinogiens

Chlorophyll Binds Carcinogens:

  • In animal and human studies Chlorophyll has been shown to bind with powerful food carcinogens like aflatoxin, preventing their absorption from the digestive system, thereby reducing their potential harm. (2, 3)
  • Chlorophylls and derivatives have shown potential anticarcinogenic effects. They have been effective in various models, including inhibiting skin tumor promotion in mice and reducing DNA adduct levels and tumor incidence in organisms like rainbow trout exposed to carcinogens.
  • The anticarcinogenic action is thought to occur through complex binding with carcinogens, reducing their bioavailability and enhancing their elimination. (6)

Chlorophyll Antioxidant Properties

Chlorophyll – Antioxidant Properties:

  • The antioxidant activity contributes to reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, which are often elevated due to toxin exposure. (4, 5)
  •  Chlorophyll’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may offer neuroprotective benefits by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, which are implicated in neurodegenerative diseases. Chlorophyll-rich diets are linked to better cognitive function and reduced risk of cognitive decline. (6)

Chlorophyll – Heavy Metal Chelation

  • The presence of metals in chlorophyll derivatives (like Mg, Zn, and Cu) enhances their antiradical capacity, suggesting that metal chelation plays a role in their antioxidant effectiveness.
  • Chlorophyll and its derivatives exhibit strong antioxidant properties, neutralizing free radicals that can arise from the presence of toxic metals and other environmental pollutants.

Chlorophyll – Anti-Obesity Effects

Chlorophylls have shown potential in controlling obesity. Studies indicate that chlorophyll can affect lipid digestion, inhibit adipogenesis, and promote browning of fat cells. Supplementation with chlorophyll-rich extracts has been shown to reduce body weight gain and improve markers of metabolic health in animal models. (6)

Human Study:

38 Women aged 45-60 were studied over 12 weeks, on Chlorophyll supplements.

  • Weight Loss: Women taking the supplement lost more weight (average 5 kg) compared to the placebo group (average 3.5 kg).
  • Cholesterol Levels: There was a significant decrease in total and LDL cholesterol in the supplement group.
  • Cravings: Participants reported fewer cravings for sweets and chocolate.
  • GLP-1 Levels: Increased GLP-1 levels were noted during meals in the supplement group, which helps in appetite and blood sugar control.

These results suggest that daily use of green plant membrane supplements can effectively support weight loss and improve health markers related to cholesterol and appetite management. (7)

Recently in early 2020, I tested the program with a 100% green-food diet and the results were amazing. Most noticeable was the increased energy, clarity, and a sense of deep inner peace along with an almost spiritual sense of light energy within my body.

This does all happen normally with the herbal detox program, but this time it was more profound than ever. I put that down to the green foods and the high chlorophyll content. Read more about this here.

The program simply involves a very high dose of the herbs and a clear focus on your food for 1 week. It’s not as hard as it sounds, once you get started.

See the full plan below.

PUBMED https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3312275/ What Is A Hot Detox Across cultures and centuries, humans have instinctively turned to heat as a cleansing agent — from Native American sweat lodges, Scandinavian saunas, Japanese onsens, to Ayurvedic steam baths. The principle is always the same: warmth promotes circulation, opens the pores, encourages sweating, and gently purifies the body of stagnant waste. The human body exhibits this mechanism naturally, when the body senses invaders such as viruses or bacteria it raises its own heat, using fever as a detox tool. Fever enhances immune cell mobility, speeds pathogen destruction, and promotes detox through increased metabolism, circulation and sweat. In traditional herbal medicine, warming herbs and spices like ginger, garlic, cayenne, turmeric have long been paired with these external heat therapies to stimulate the body’s eliminative organs: liver, skin, kidneys, lungs, and bowels. Today we’re starting with the hot culinary herbs, as foods, and some of their benefits, then sharing a few of the ways thay can be used. Why Do A Hot Detox In Winter During the cooler months of the year everything can slow down, and we can become vunerable to infection, so it’s always good to increase the heat. Heat is often used as part of a detox program, either directly in baths, sauna, steam, but also by way of medicinal foods and herbs.  To boost your immune system with ingredients that are naturally anti-viral, anti-bacterial and protect and encrouage the throat, nose, and lungs to stay clear. To Boost your metabolism, preventing the weight gain that often occurs during the winter months. The speed up digestion and elimination, because we tend to sit around more in the darker months, we need to keep everything moving. Using Herbs For A Hot Detox Something that is well known ion herbal medicine, is that the warming herbs increase metabolic functions, such as circulation, immune functions, digestion and general metab olic rate, all of which assist with winter ills. Some examples include: black pepper, chili, cayenne pepper, ginger, garlic, paprika, curry powders (masala), turmeric, cardamon. Recipes For A Hot Detox Heat In Holistic Medicine In Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine, winter is associated with the Water element and kidneys, which govern energy reserves. Ayurveda views winter as a time when Kapha (earth/water) energy dominates, causing sluggishness and weight gain; spicy, light foods and herbs kindle Agni (the fire element denotes all factors responsible for digestion and metabolism/transformation) to clear toxins and restore balance. Our detox programs align with these principles by promoting digestion and vitality, plus supports kidney and liver detoxification, preventing stagnation that can lead to fatigue or illness during winter months Sweating for Detox Sweat is more than just a cooling mechanism — it’s one of the body’s secondary detoxification channels. Studies have confirmed that heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury can be excreted in sweat. Mercury levels normalized with repeated saunas in one case report. (1) Infrared saunas have gained modern popularity for detoxification. Some small studies suggest they can help mobilize fat-soluble toxins (like certain PCBs and BPA) by raising core temperature and enhancing circulation. (2) Herbs & Metabolism Traditional detox plans often lean heavily on spices and warming herbs for a reason: Ginger, chilli, cinnamon, black pepper, and turmeric help dilate blood vessels and improve circulation. This supports the liver’s ability to process toxins and encourages the lymphatic system to clear cellular waste. Gingerols in ginger have been shown to boost bile production, aiding the liver in fat metabolism and toxin elimination. Capsaicin stimulates thermogenesis and increases energy expenditure, which can help mobilize stored toxins from fat tissue. Hot baths, herbal steams, and hydrotherapy have been used for centuries to support detoxification by: Opening pores → passive elimination through the skin. Increasing blood flow → moving toxins toward organs of elimination. Easing muscle tension → boosting lymphatic drainage. While modern studies on baths for detox are sparse, the physiological rationale is strong: warmth + circulation + sweat = elimination I recommend using Epsom salts in your baths (magnesium sulfate). It has a reputation for helping draw out waste and supporting liver detox indirectly by relaxing the nervous system. Add 2-3 cups to a hot bath and soak for 20 minutes. Add some essential oils of Lavender or tea tree for extra benefits. Read More About Immune Boosting Herbs
